The Rocks: a weekend art and makers walk
Start with contemporary art at the MCA, then browse the makers around The Rocks. A two-stop weekend plan from Circular Quay, with ticket and access details to check first.
Museum first, makers second
Make MCA Australia the main art stop, then leave time for The Rocks Markets nearby. This is a source-checked suggestion for a Saturday or Sunday, not a first-hand review or an organised tour. Pick an exhibition before you book and keep the rest of the afternoon flexible.
Both stops publish weekend opening hours of 10am–5pm. Museum admission and market entry are different: MCA entry is ticketed, while the markets are free to browse. Individual museum workshops or events may have their own registration.

The makers stop in this route; use the Saturday or Sunday session for the 10am–5pm weekend plan.
Before you go: Check the organiser’s current stallholders and notices before setting out.
01 / Start with the MCA
The museum is at 140 George Street, The Rocks, a six-minute walk from Circular Quay according to its visitor page. Trains, ferries, buses and light rail connect at the quay.
Choose one exhibition or programme rather than trying to fit everything in. MCA Members and under-18s receive free museum entry; other visitors should check the current ticket and what it includes. The museum is cashless.
02 / Browse the market streets
On Saturday and Sunday, The Rocks Markets lists stalls at Jack Mundey Place, Playfair Street and George Street from 10am–5pm. The mix includes local makers, art, design and food. Attendance changes, so look at the current stallholder information rather than expecting a particular artist.
Use the walk to look closely at materials, ask how a piece was made and keep the maker’s details if you want to come back to it. There is no need to buy anything to enjoy browsing.
Keep the route simple
Use 140 George Street as the museum stop and Jack Mundey Place as the market stop. The market spreads over several streets, so use the current map and follow the stalls that interest you.
The Rocks has changes in level and heritage streets. For a step-free visit, check the museum’s lift and access information and use a live route planner for the outdoor section. This route is not a guarantee that every market approach is step-free.
Before you go
Check the day’s exhibition ticket, weather and any market notices. If the museum is your priority, allow it the time it needs and treat the market as an optional second stop.
This plan is for the weekend. MCA Thursday late opening and the market’s shorter Friday hours are different outings; do not carry the weekend timetable over to those days.
