ART WALK

Chippendale to Eveleigh: an art afternoon

A free gallery in Chippendale, then a programme-led stop at Carriageworks. Two places to slow down, with a route you can shape around the day’s opening hours.

Two stops, one afternoon

Start at White Rabbit Gallery on Balfour Street, then head towards Eveleigh for an exhibition or event at Carriageworks. This is a suggested route compiled from venue information, rather than a report of a visit. Book the Carriageworks stop first if it has a timed session.

Wednesday to Saturday is the overlap in the venues’ published general opening days. White Rabbit also opens on Sunday during exhibitions; Carriageworks Sunday access depends on the individual event. Check both programmes before setting out.

Before you go: Book the actual performance time. The venue’s general opening hours are not the show timetable.

01 / Give White Rabbit time

At 30 Balfour Street, the gallery offers free admission to its exhibitions of contemporary Chinese art. Its published hours are 10am–5pm, Wednesday to Sunday, during exhibition periods. It closes between shows, usually in May and November.

If you enjoy a guided introduction, the gallery lists public tours at 11am and 3pm on open days. No booking is needed, but keep the group small. Choose the earlier tour if you want to leave room for a second venue.

02 / Take the route at your own pace

The two addresses are White Rabbit, 30 Balfour Street, Chippendale, and Carriageworks, 245 Wilson Street, Eveleigh. Use the walking directions for a live route rather than an assumed shortcut through a building or station.

Leave a break between the venues. This guide does not assume a walking speed or promise that every street on the route is step-free. For access planning, use the venue guidance below and check your transport connection.

03 / Choose the Carriageworks stop

A fair, a design market and an immersive exhibition make very different second stops. Browse the current listings on the venue page and choose one that fits your time and budget. A general venue opening time is not a ticketed session time.

Carriageworks publishes Wednesday–Saturday, 10am–5pm as its general opening hours, with separate hours for individual events. Check the bay, start time and ticket on the organiser’s page before travelling.

Getting there, access and the trip home

White Rabbit lists a ten-minute walk from Central or Redfern station. It has wheelchair entry on Balfour Street, a lift to all gallery levels and an accessible toilet on the ground floor. Ask staff for help at the entrance.

Carriageworks has a street-level ramp at 245 Wilson Street and level access to its event spaces. Arrange accessible theatre seating with the venue when booking. The venue lists an eight-minute walk from Redfern station; check the live transport planner for the journey home.
