Free art exhibitions in Sydney: plan your visit

Look closely without paying an admission fee. Start with these selected exhibitions, then choose the setting, opening day and journey that suit you.

Where can I see art in Sydney for free?

Woollahra Gallery at Redleaf, Glebe Art Show and Sculpture by the Sea offer different ways to see art with free admission. They are seasonal examples from our calendar, not an exhaustive directory. Current or upcoming dates appear below; completed events drop out of the shortlist.

Choose the kind of visit you want. A gallery lets you concentrate on a smaller group of works indoors. A community art show can introduce you to work available to buy. An outdoor exhibition makes the walk part of the experience, with weather and terrain to consider.

What does free entry include?

Free entry refers to admission to the exhibition. It does not mean that artwork, parking, travel, food or a separately organised workshop is free. Check the activity you want to attend rather than relying on the venue’s general admission policy.

You do not need to arrive intending to buy. Spend time looking, read the labels and ask staff about a piece that interests you. If you do want to enquire, establish who handles sales and whether the displayed price includes any frame, stand or delivery.

How do I choose an accessible outing?

Woollahra Gallery publishes details of its lift and accessible facilities. Sculpture by the Sea warns that the full coastal route includes stairs and limited wheelchair access, and suggests Marks Park for a more manageable selection. Read the linked venue guidance for your own requirements.

Do not treat Double Bay, Forest Lodge and the Bondi coast as a single walking route. Choose one main destination, then decide whether there is time for another. Check opening hours for the day you plan to attend: an exhibition’s date range is not a daily timetable.

How can I find the next free exhibition?

Use the Sydney calendar’s free-entry filter and choose your dates. Read the admission wording on the event page, especially for festivals with both free and paid sessions. If the shortlist below is empty, it means we need a newly confirmed selection, not that Sydney has no free art to see.
