ART OUTINGS BY INTEREST

Melbourne ceramics fairs and markets: a visitor guide

A dedicated clay fair or a mixed makers’ market? Compare the formats, meet makers where their attendance is confirmed and ask useful questions before buying.

Where can I find ceramics in Melbourne?

Melbourne Ceramic Fair is a dedicated event for ceramic work. Finders Keepers’ published Melbourne lineup includes ceramic makers, while Rose Street’s maker directory also includes ceramics. A directory entry is not a promise that a maker attends every session; check before travelling for one artist.

The shortlist below uses current or upcoming editions in our calendar. It separates a ceramics-focused visit from broader art and design browsing. This is a starting point for choosing an outing, not a ranking or a list of every pottery studio in Melbourne.

Dedicated ceramics fair or mixed design market?

A dedicated fair makes it easier to compare approaches to clay within one visit. Look at form, surface, weight and scale, and ask how a work was made. Decide whether you are looking for something functional, something sculptural or simply a chance to learn.

A mixed market offers other materials and disciplines alongside ceramics. That can suit gift browsing or a group with different interests. Start with the current exhibitor list and leave room to discover something unexpected; do not assume an image from a previous market represents this edition.

What should I ask before buying handmade ceramics?

Tell the maker how you intend to use the piece. A vase, decorative object and everyday bowl have different requirements. Ask about the specific work in front of you rather than treating all ceramics as interchangeable.

  • Is it intended for food or drink, or for display only?
  • What cleaning method does the maker recommend? Is dishwasher or microwave use appropriate for this piece?
  • What are its dimensions, and is the displayed piece the one I will receive?
  • Is this a one-off work or part of a repeatable series? Are small variations expected?
  • How will it be packed, and what are the delivery or collection arrangements?

What should I check before I leave?

Check the date, actual visitor hours and admission separately. Northcote, Fitzroy and Carlton are different destinations; plan your journey around the event you most want to see. If step-free access matters, check both the venue information and the transport route.

For a purchase, keep the maker’s name, receipt and care instructions. Ask before photographing work or picking up a fragile object. You can also visit simply to look and learn, without making a purchase.
