Brisbane artist and handmade markets: where to start

An evening in the square, a riverside market or a daytime browse at Whale Mall: choose a Brisbane makers’ market that fits your day.

Which Brisbane artist market should I visit?

Start with the setting and time of day. BrisStyle Twilight offers evening browsing in King George Square. The Great Artist Market uses Felons Barrel Hall and its outdoor lawns. BrisStyle’s Whale Mall market is based in the South Bank Cultural Precinct.

These are mixed artist and handmade markets, with a range of disciplines and products. They are useful places to discover independent makers, but they are not interchangeable with a gallery-led art fair. Check the edition’s program if you are looking specifically for wall art, sculpture or ceramics.

Can I meet the person who made the work?

The organisers describe opportunities to buy from makers. Start a conversation about the work, but check who is at the stall: an assistant or representative may be helping. A familiar name on a directory or an older event photograph does not establish attendance at the next market.

Ask what drew the maker to a material, whether a work is unique or part of a series, and how it should be displayed. If you want to enquire later, ask for the artist’s preferred website or contact rather than relying on a photograph of the stall.

Are the markets free to browse?

Our listed editions have free market entry. Purchases and refreshments cost extra, and some activities use separate bookings. The Great Artist Market, for example, advertises a floral workshop with its own ticket link. Check the activity’s details before assuming your place is included.

If you plan to buy, check payment methods with the seller. For a large or fragile piece, establish packing and delivery before paying. The cheapest way home may not be the best way to transport the work safely.

What should I check on the day?

Confirm the edition date rather than assuming the same weekend every month. BrisStyle’s December Whale Mall date is earlier than the usual last-Saturday pattern. Read current weather notices and check access information for the particular venue.

Pets are another venue-specific detail: The Great Artist Market distinguishes its indoor market space from the dog-friendly Rivergarden lawn. Check the organiser’s policy before bringing a pet. For transport, use the exact venue address rather than the broad Brisbane label.
